Northern Lights Festival wrapped up its 53rd edition!
Northern Lights has grooved the crowds for the 53rd consecutive year, and has no intention of stopping there. Here’s a recap of its best moments!
This year’s festival once again welcomed a large number of artists who got us moving and travelling to the rhythm of their music. Despite the obstacles faced, Canada’s longest continually running festival has done it again, bringing the Sudbury community and many others worldwide together for a great weekend of music and fun! Here are some highlights from this weekend.
NLFB DAY 1
The Northern Lights Festival Boreal kicked off on Thursday evening with an electric atmosphere. The festivities began with a captivating performance by Sudbury local and winner of the 2024 Meltdown solo artist category, James Gray. The energy continued to build with a powerful, groovy set from reggae band The Human Rights, who transcended us with their reggae music, which was unanimously acclaimed. The highlight of the evening was a show-stopping performance by Jully Black, who delivered an unforgettable experience. Jully engaged the crowd, getting everyone on their feet and truly created a memorable night.
NLFB DAY 2
On the second day of the festival, the grounds got soaked from a thunderstorm, causing the park to evacuate, due to city regulations and leaving everybody devastated by the unfortunate event. Luckily enough, by 9 PM, the park and festival reopened. Powerhouse band Shred Kelly took the stage with an incredible performance. The crowd, full of raincoats and umbrellas, did not let the rain stop them from having a good time! After Shred Kelly, Mattmac brought up the energy, connecting with the crowd and putting on an unforgettable performance. The evening’s headliner, July Talk, then took the stage and left the crowd wanting more. July talk vocalist Leah Fay was found crowd surfing and balancing a stack of baseball caps on her head, given by various audience members around her. With passion, chemistry and raw electric sounds, they put on a show that NLFB will never forget.
NLFB DAY 3
Day 3 of the Northern Lights Festival Boreal was a rollercoaster of emotions and events. The day started with a sudden thunderstorm that forced another evacuation, leading to the cancellation of many acts. However, the downtime allowed performers to bond backstage, creating a unique sense of camaraderie. Thankfully, the park reopened just in time for the evening shows, where audiences were treated to incredible performances by 2VPlus, Boogát, Sarah Jane Scouten, The Cicadas, Lynn Miles, Housewife, Moskitto Bar, Empty House, and The Rural Alberta Advantage. A special highlight was when a devoted fan of The Rural Alberta Advantage received a surprise last-minute meet and greet with the band. The night continued with packed after-hours venues at The Townehouse and The Lounge 390 Bar, where festival-goers enjoyed intimate concerts from NLFB artists Thea May, Evangeline Gentle, The 555, and Tell it to Sweeney. Despite the weather’s challenges, Day 3 turned out to be one for the books.
NLFB DAY 4
The final day of the Northern Lights Festival Boreal was blessed with sunshine and clear skies, a welcome change that helped make up for the previous weather obstacles. Families enjoyed various activities, including the Amaze N Fun Inflatables, interactive and educational performances on the Family Stage, interactive activities with Let’s Talk Science, soccer fun with Little Kickers, face painting and more! The OLG Teaser Stage under Katherine’s Gazebo at Bell Park drew crowds with free performances by artists like Ricardo Chavez and Boogát. Successful workshops throughout the day offered unique and interactive connections between artists and attendees, while nearby, artists painted and sculpted live near the Canvas Cabaret Stage—vendors connected with festival-goers, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Sudbury local country star Andrew Hyatt delivered an incredible performance for his hometown, and Tim Baker closed off the Main Stage with his beautiful melodies. As the day turned into night, artists and attendees continued to create meaningful connections and impromptu jam sessions during the after-hours festivities. It was a perfect end to an unforgettable festival.
