Agadez, Niger

African, Guitar, International, Rock

(Friday headliner) Grammy nominated artist Bombino came across his first guitar in the early 90s, while in exile in Burkina Faso. He never looked back, inspired by Saharan tradition (Ali Farka Toure, Tinariwen), as well as artists like Jimi Hendrix, and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. His first official record, Agadez, was released in 2011 to worldwide acclaim. It caught the attention of five-time Grammy winning musician/producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who produced his breakout 2013 album Nomad. For his next record, Azel, Bombino worked with David Longstreth of The Dirty Projectors, introducing a new genre he dubs ‘Tuareggae’ – a blend of Tuareg guitar with reggae rhythm.

In 2017, Bombino returned to Africa (Morocco) to record a new album, outside of the shadow of celebrity producers, to create the most authentic expression of his music possible. Not long after its release, Noisey called him ‘the world’s greatest guitarist’ and he was dubbed ‘The Sultan of Shred’ by The New York Times. Deran was heralded by ciritcs and fans alike, eventually making Bombino the first artist from Niger ever to be nominated for a Grammy. In 2020, Bombino released ‘Live In Amsterdam’, dedicated the album to his dear friend and bandmate Illias Mohamed who tragically passed away just a few weeks before the release of the album.

Regardless of the challenges life throws at him, Bombino marches ever forward on his mission to use music to spread love, understanding, and the beauty of Tuareg culture throughout the world.
