Mickey O’Brien was born and raised in Copper Cliff, Ontario in shadow of the iconic Sudbury copper nickel refinery. His music represents the raw, unfiltered experience of a working class man in the modern world. By day he works as a hard rock miner, literally exploring the underground. He simultaneously channels a variety of influencers and predecessors (i.e. Atmosphere, Eminem, Guru) to deliver hard-hitting raps that touch on class struggle, love & loss, and the daily trials of life.
As Mickey O’Brien, he departs from his more ideological work as Kill the Autocrat and makes the political personal, rooting it in his own experience. ‘My Drift’ is his debut album under the Mickey O’Brien name, produced by Canadian beat and MPC master Fresh Kils, and features contributions from established Canadian artists like Mindbender Supreme and Lee Reed. Mickey O’Brien shows that the genre is allowed to grow up and mature, but that doesn’t make it any less gritty or abrasive.
This artist’s ‘after-hours’ performance, and some of their recordings contain mature themes.
